HVPC News Letter

In 1973, at the Budapest CACIB dog show I came across 'Amy' - Amy Cierna Voda - my first Hungarian Vizsla (wirehair) and my love affair with the breed began. I was still completing my studies and couldn't afford to purchase a pedigreed dog, however my eagerness impressed the breeder, Vendelin Schultz, and we ended up taking 'Amy' home on a breeder's term arrangement. Thankfully, Mum gave her approval and agreed with my choice this time, not like in the past, when I collected stray dogs and took them home... My interest in showing was encouraged by my cousin Marcze Janos, who later founded the famous Vom Golf Dachshund Kennel.

'Amy' and I lived up to expectations. She had a good show career, always winning "excellent" grading, such as 3 x CAC & Res. CACIB's & Res. World Champion. She proved to be a good brood bitch producing lovely puppies under my "Oregbuda" prefix. 'Amy' was mated back to her famous grandfather Bk Hun Ch Botond Orkan Rex, who was a dominant producer. His bloodline can be found in most wirehair Vizslas' pedigrees in Hungary.

In 1976, I entered 'Amy' at the World Dog Show held in Innsbruck, Austria, which eventually led to my freedom. Leaving communist Hungary, 'Amy' and I travelled throughout Europe for nearly two years while my immigration documents were being processed.

It broke my heart, when I had to leave her behind in Istanbul, due to the strict twelve months plus quarantine regulations in Australia. I found 'Amy' an ideal home with a wealthy family whose passion was hunting and the Hungarian Vizsla was the only breed of gundog which they had not owned. 'Amy' spent the rest of her life doing what she liked most, hunting.

The first Hungarian Vizslas that I saw in Australia were at the Melbourne Royal Show in the early eighties. I found out, that Vizslas here were a relatively new breed and there were only a few breeders. I was determined to get one, but those I saw were not sound and far from the breed type that I was used to, so I started my search in the hope of finding better specimens.

In 1985, I finally managed to book a puppy in QLD from Kerry McKay out of her lovely bitch, sired by the first USA import Am Ch Paradox Chatos Star. After a long wait, the litter was finally born in 1986. My pup's arrival was memorable, as the day coincided with my Mother's arrival from Hungary to settle with us in Australia. "Sari" - Ch Aranyoz Huncut Holgy - became our foundation bitch. She gave us lots of joy throughout her 15 years and is still sadly missed.

In 1989, I registered my new kennel prefix, Hubertus, as my Hungarian kennel prefix could not able to be written or pronounced in English. I chose Hubertus after St.Hubert, the patron Saint of The Hunters.

For me, it was a difficult task to start breeding here, knowing the FCI guidelines, where health was the foremost concern and close inbreeding was a no-no. Hungarian Vizslas here had a very small gene pool, already far too inbred with accompanying health problems. The several closely-related UK imports did not provide any fresh bloodline and there were only two breeders who imported from other than the UK. So there was not much scope for improvement. I knew, that in order to breed sound, healthy Hungarian Vizslas, new and quality bloodlines were needed.

Our worldwide search began and with a sizeable investment. It resulted over the years, in the importation of several quality dual bloodlines (show/hunting) from reputable kennels to further the breed.

In 1990, the first Hubertus "C" litter arrived, sired by Ch & Hun.Bk. Ch Matai Darazs (Imp Hun) bred by Miklos Farkashazi. In 1992, the "D" & "E" litters represented the first Artificially Inseminated (A.I.) Vizsla litters in Australia. Our bitches were surgically inseminated with frozen semen imported by us from two different sires - Am Dual Ch AFC Behi Red Chief JH (USA) bred by Bernard Boggs and Am & Can Ch Boeltes' Tribute To Panderre CDX. JH. (USA) bred by John & Pat Boelte.

In 1993, our fourth "F" litter was also to an American sire - Am Ch Dirigos Trademark (Imp.USA) bred by Suzanne & Larry Grey. In addition, an exchange arrived, Nz Ch Heart N Soul Of Szep-Allat (Imp.NZ) bred by the late Jan Edwards, which resulted in a decade of friendship & a close breeding program, which brought the breed to new heights in New Zealand.

1995 saw another new addition to our kennel, bred by Peter & Liz Harper - Pittswarren Judah Of Hubertus (Imp.UK) who is full brother, out of a repeat mating to Sh Ch Pittswarren Levi, one of the top Hungarian Vizslas in the breed's history winning 37 CCs!

In 1997, we moved to "Hubertus Lodge" our new property - especially for the dogs (of course), where they run free on two acres of hillside with special facilities. Also, they enjoy regular access to hundreds of hectares of farmland with river and wetlands.

In 2002, after many years of searching for new bloodlines, we settled on a four year old bitch Hun Grand Ch/Ft Ch Csokolandy Dorka Of Hubertus from Hungary, bred by Sandor Kertesz. This was a surprise package,- not one, but eleven imports! A week after "Dorka" cleared quarantine she whelped a litter of ten puppies. This represented the first Imported In Dam (IID) Vizsla litters in Australia. She was mated to Ft Ch Luppa Vadasz Ficko (Hun). The #1 Field Trial Vizsla in 2002/2003, whom I saw at his very first dog show. Since then he has become a prominent show dog with multi Group placements also attained his International Ch. & Hun.Grand Ch title.

In 2004, after not finding what we wanted at Crufts, it was by sheer coincidence that I came across a new English import bloodline in Australia! Dr Francis Gordon had just moved over here from the UK with her two Vizslas and I bought a male pup Rhubradhu Rusthi Fahri from their litter. His pedigree was tailor-made for us, comprising bloodlines from the leading UK and Hungarian kennels.

The above import bloodlines gave Hubertus Kennels a firm foundation and sufficient scope to breed top quality, sound and healthy Vizslas with a good temperament and plenty of natural hunting ability.

Over the years, we put Vizslas in the winning circle; having bred multiple Best In Show (all breeds & specialty) winning dogs establishing the kennel as one of the best in the country. Our success at Royal Shows, in all States of Australia, not only at breed level but In Group & In Show level is greater than any other Vizsla kennel's. We  set many records, Royal Show Breed Record holders, Top Producing Sire & Dam in Australia. We also put Vizslas back in the Field Trial winners circuits at National Championship level. In the past 12 years only 2 Vizslas achieved Field Trail Champion title, they were bred by us. We are proud to say that, our Vizslas excel in other areas as well, - retrieving, obedience, agility, tracking, search and rescue, etc.

We have exported our Hungarian Vizslas worldwide, with huge International success - winning Best Of Breed & 4th BIG at the 1999 Europe Dog Show, Austria. World Champion title in 2003 Dortmund, Germany and in Hungary R/U Best In Show at the prestigious Budapest CACIB 2001.

Our long-term plans include some interesting combinations of new bloodlines to continue the pursuit of our ultimate passion, improving, protecting and breeding the finest Hungarian Vizslas.

Our overseas "holidays" incorporate, or based around, dog shows wherever we travel in the world; to see, to learn, to improve and always on the lookout for potential imports keeping the breed's interests at heart. We have attended all the major shows including several American Nationals, World Dog Shows, Crufts, Major All Breeds and Specialty Shows in Europe.

We have met several keen breeders and Vizsla addicts, who are a great help to us. We provide a rescue service & refuge to Hungarian Vizslas that are in need of re-housing and several of our Vizslas are active Therapy Dogs in hospitals and nursing homes, providing valuable service.

I have also taken an active part in the "dog fraternity" in a professional way. From 1993-98, I was Consultant to the VCC Property Control Committee for the Development of Members' Facilities. My projects included the design/building permit/tendering of the KCC Park Indoor Judging Pavilion and several other upgrading facilities at the Royal Show Grounds.

Since 1995, I have been the Editor of the Hungarian Vizsla Postal Club of Australia. The HVPCA was established in 1978, being the first Vizsla Club in Australia. Non-profit organisation with Australia- wide membership, by-monthly newsletter & several competitions with great trophies.
